    Time-Out at Tierney

I had a bunch of you notice there was no flyer for a September meet up, and I was overjoyed that you’re all beginning to crave that hour for mindfulness, focus, real-talk, learning and sharing.  There will be another one soon! Meantime, I’m allowing space for monthly meet ups to take on different forms, as it did this month.  September’s meet up happened as a closed event for a company called Tierney, a Philadelphia-based PR firm.  Tierney invited me to come in and lead a meditation and wellness session for their employees as part of the culmination of an initiative called “wellness week.” TODAY The focus all week was on integrating wellness into the company culture to foster more well-being in the organization.  I was floored (rather, elevated) to see Tierney joining the ranks of other companies that are waking up to the importance of caring about the well being of their employees, not just because research shows it actually has myriad positive benefits on the bottom line by reducing sick days (yes, happy people have more robust immunity which translates to less sick days), engenders more productive people (more research: happier people are more productive people), but also because it increases employee engagement like you wouldn’t believe –who doesn’t want to work for a company that actually cares about the happiness and well being of its people?

TODAY3I was honored to be the top-off to such an amazing week for Tierney.  You could feel the energy in the space after a week of focus on physical and mental wellness- it was high and alive, calm yet invigorated.  It was working.  My job was to round out the week with a session on mindfulness and the science of positive psychology, both pieces of the equation that education and experience have taught me are fundamental to a flourishing existence.  This meet up ran as most of my other ones do, a rather conversational flow around the topics of meditation (what is it? Why do we need it?) and positive psychology (what, as opposed to negative psychology?) and its most salient interventions.  I interspersed meditations on breathing, gratitude, and metta (loving-kindness), with lots of discussion and conversation around how these experiences felt in the mind and body, and why they are so vital to our well-being. TODAY1

Beyond the incredible reception I could feel in the room around the subject matter, a literal leaning forward of bodies as the Tierney folks took in the good stuff, the experience had an unexpected effect on me. I was right in the thick of a really challenging time in my life, as I processed the pain of a break up and wrestled with mammoth decisions and choices around next steps in my life (think backing out of the PhD program that seemed like the perfect fit, leaving the family business, etc).  I woke up that Friday morning with heaviness in my heart and anxiety coursing through my veins.  How could I teach meditation when I felt so personally in flux? And yet I knew as I always have that the perfect antidote to that state of being is flow, where I would forget myself, all sense of time, and be right there in the moment.  And flow is exactly what I got; this material, this knowledge, is so second-nature to me now it’s like it’s in my DNA.  Being in service of others in this way, as a teacher and guide, is like my medicine.  As I work through my own process and journey, all of the glorious evolution and growing pains that seem to be happening at warp speed right now, serving others in flow states has been my saving Grace.

Thank you Universe, for the opportunity to serve.  I can’t think of a more salient gratitude prayer than that.

  • Attunement + Courage + Acceptance = Flow

    Attunement + Courage + Acceptance = Flow

You want the formula for a flourishing life? There it is.  Much easier written and said than done, but there it is.  It warrants some explanation, and of course, a bit of convincing, because when in life is anything ever as simple as a formula, an equation, or a black-and-white answer? Almost never, because we are emotional creatures (especially those of us with that extra X chromosome), and therefore rarely make decisions without some amount of emotionality.  And that’s a good thing, so long as you use your emotions to guide your processing and growth, but not allow them to take you over, to any extreme, even when the emotions are super happy ones (what goes up must come down…) Let me walk you through each of the above components, explain why it’s a part of the equation, and then try to shed some clarity on allowing this formula to be colored by the very real emotionality of the human experience and still hold true.

Attunement is the process of aligning with your true self, your due North, your inner voice, your internal compass.  IMG_8980There are several ways to fine-tune your attunement, the ideal being a meditation practice because this practice allows you to find space and stillness with yourself, go inside, and listen for what’s coming up.  The more you engage with this practice over time, the more adept you are at recognizing who you really are, what you really want, and when you’re not in alignment with those things.  And what happens when you inevitably come out of alignment (translation: growth spurt on the horizon, and growing pains are a part of this process)? You must be attuned to the change trying to happen, and have the Courage to allow it even if it means failure, falling, loss or letting go.  Here’s where emotion comes in.  We are emotional creatures, we have hearts and feelings and a spectrum of manifestations of these feelings. IMG_8983 So when we’re faced with loss or letting go, we may panic, become depressed, get angry, hold on tight and hope staying right where we are will be ok.  But it won’t be ok, because you’re in a growth phase and that’s what we are designed to do-grow, evolve, become better versions of ourselves than before.  So fighting it only drops you back down into a less-than version, a place of frustration and stuckness. IMG_8984 Acceptance, on the other hand, says to the Universe: “I’m ready to grow, and I trust that all of this is unfolding for the highest good.”  This gives you more of the good juju, the stuff that infuses you with satisfaction and validation of your forward momentum.  The opposite, well…

I recently came up against some really hard choices, and I made the bold ones; the ones that were in alignment with my body and spirit, and the girl I want to be, not the one I was or am.  Almost immediately, the Universe responded with opportunities and experiences to cultivate that ideal future self.  And then I panicked.  I realized the consequences of my choices as their finality set in.  I lost the man I loved, I rescinded my enrollment to graduate school.  And as fear took over, those opportunities started to fade and wane, one workshop I was to speak at was cancelled, another gig postponed.  My fear and lack of conviction was sending a dilute response to the Universe in direct contrast to the bold manner in which I had made the choices in the first place.

So unless I want to stay in this place of unraveling, I’ve got to move myself forward toward Acceptance, of the divine order of things, of my own inner knowledge and guidance system, and of my faith and trust in that system.  Who knows what may unfold? That’s not for us to know.  That’s the whole point of being in the moment – if you could tell the future, you’d never be right here.  I could go back to grad school when the time and fit are right, my guy and I could find our way back to each other when we’re poised to enhance each others’ lives again.  I only know it’s not right now, and this acceptance, without the shackles of fear, leads to complete present-moment immersion and joy.  Another word for that? Flow.

  • The word “sincere” is one of my buzz words lately.

The word “sincere” is one of my buzz words lately.

The word “sincere” is one of my buzz words lately, put on my radar when I was joined by Syreeta “Sincerely Syreeta” Martin on my most recent Mindfulness Meet Up. It got me thinking a lot about what it means to be “sincere.” I asked her why she chose this moniker, making a strong enough commitment to the word that it has become a permanent fixture of her identity. She explained that if she puts energy into something now, it’s because she wantsto. It’s a simple idea, but think about that. We invest so much of our energy in things we think we should engage with, even when we know deep down they don’t make us happy. Like choosing a career because your parents want you to, or because it’ll impress people. What if we only expended energy on the things we were really attuned to? We’d be happier, more successful people. You wouldn’t spend the rest of your life with someone you couldn’t be yourself around, right? You’d drain all of your energy and resources trying to be someone or something else, leaving little room for your authentic self to have expression. Being your true self, in all of life’s contexts, works the same way. image
Don’t get it twisted-this kind of sincerity is neither easy, nor always accepted. It takes courage, because you’re telling the world you abide by sincerity, truth, authenticity, basically “keeping it real.” In a world full of ersatz and saccharine, the most manufactured media posing as “reality TV,” plastic surgery and procedures passing for genetic perfection, airbrushed covers and autotuned voices giving us impossible standards of comparison, real is ever elusive and ever harder to fight for. Syreeta has made the commitment to try, and it’s making it that much more obvious to me how very few folks really do, especially in the media world. We spoke about sincerity in Journalism, a field in which we’ve both worked and trained, and we both acknowledged how tricky it can be to fight for the good, the authentic and the real, when there’s so much demand for the manufactured. I went to a party recently, a media-heavy event with local celebrities, beautiful people, and folks I consider friends. Almost as soon as I stepped inside, I felt caged-in and disillusioned. There was a coldness throughout, a superficial level of interaction among the guests, including from those I consider friends who now acted almost as strangers. The air was so thick with airs. It was like everyone was covered with an ego-blanket. I crave warmth and depth of conversation and connection, and this was the opposite. I just wanted to leave. I was tempted to run, separate myself from that which made me uncomfortable, and go back home to my man (as real as they get). But I had been honored that night, and owed the experience my presence. It was a heavy weight on my shoulders to stay and interact in the way I wanted others’ to be, but I knew that was part of my purpose in being represented there. Gandhi said, “be the change you wish to see.”image Instead of wishing for your world to be better or different, become such a force for that change, such a strong advocate, that your world begins to change around you. In this context, it took all the energy I had to try to connect on deeper levels, but I fought for it, asking an attendee of one of my meet ups whether she was meditating regularly, asking a friend how her business was going and what her heart was telling her around it, prioritizing people over pictures by conversing with folks that wanted to talk even as I was losing important press opportunities. I was intent on finding the inner beauty and uncovering it even as the emphasis fought hard to be the superficial beauty surrounding me. I can’t say the ego blanket changed to a humility blanket, but I did my part to become the change, to be me even in a context that wanted little me, not big ME.
One small ripple can create a wave, so get out there and fight for something deeper, something higher, something more authentic or real. It’s in the contexts that it’s the hardest to do so that it’s the most important to Be the change, Be better, Be love.

  • It’s Happy Hour (for my skin)

It’s Happy Hour (for my skin)

image image imageThe beautiful folks at the Body Shop just sent me some luxe samples of their new limited edish Virgin Mohito body care collection and Vitamin C skin care. These are fan faves, and as I am a huge Body Shop fan, I had to have em. They arrived in an eco-friendly and inspirational tote a-la Lu Lu Lemon style, with beautiful phrases like “Be yourself, everybody else is taken” and “Do it with passion or not at all.” Reading those inspirational words I was already feeling high before I even cracked open the virgin mohito body gel in the shower this morning – one whiff and I was rocking a huge buzz from the smell, a minty-citrus confection that transported me right to the beach. It conjured up images of lying on a beach chair under an umbrella sipping a mohito, the quintessential summer cocktail. Relaxed, euphoric, peaceful, balanced. As I reveled in the visualization, my brain flooded with happy chemicals. It’s an amazing trick to get quick bursts ofhappiness –just close your eyes and meditate upon (contemplate or imagine) your favorite memory, person, place or thing. For your brain, reliving positive memories in your mind mimic actually being there, so you have the same happy chemicals flooding your body as if you were experiencing the real thing. Between the water cascading over me and the heavenly scent, I felt blissful. I exited and immediately pumped out some of the Vitamin C skin boostonto my face. Now, I’m a huge fan of vitamin C in general, for boosting immunity and smoothing wrinkles. Unlike the ones I’m used to, which smell a bit chemical/industrial, this one has the most pleasant citrus scent and goes on like buttah. It actually feels like it leaves a sheer velvet layer on your skin. I don’t know about you, but soft, smooth skin always makes me happy (and anyone else who’s got the lucky privilege of touching it). I finished off my shower experience with a spritz of the Vitamin C Energising Face Spritz. I wish I had this on my recent trip to Europe-there many hot days in Spain where I could’ve used not just a refreshing spritz on my skin, but an instant pick-me-up and smoother. This spray is so legit-it’s instant glow and refreshment for sluggish summer skin. My face feels like a baby’s butt right now, my body smells like the perfect buzz. It’s a winning combo.
